This is a collection of LOs that I used to teach a junior-senior seminar course on organometallics during Fall 2023 at Harvey Mudd College. There were a total of 11 students in the course. Most of the students had taken one semester of both organic and physical chemistry, and about half had taken inorganic (none from me, though, as I was on sabbatical). I used the Stanley textbook hosted on this site (linked below).
I used a shortened version of the Goldberg lit discussion that I have used for many years rather than teach the whole paper. I also created a hybrid in class activity combining a Kubas lit discussion with the Jones & Feher KIE exercise. These new versions of the LOs were posted to VIPEr and linked below. I used portions of the Crystal Field and Fisher-Schrock personality profile LOs listed below in the initial few weeks.
The biggest change from prior years (linked below) is that I compressed the initial set of lectures and guided inquiry exercises from 6 weeks to 5 (compressing all the ligands from 2 weeks to 1), and then did 5 lit discussion LOs (including three brand new ones from the Cook lab, the Tonks lab and the Williams lab, as well as the Grubbs and Arnold ones) followed by 4 student developed lit discussions. The student-derived reading guides were not very detailed so I am not including them in this collection, but the discussions generally were good because of the practice they received.
In this course I do an oral exam. After a semester of reading papers using a reading guide, the final is just a paper from the prior 6-12 months with no reading guide. I turned this paper by the Papish group into an LO and is also linked below.
