Ligands can bind to anions, just as they do to metal ions, and Bowman-James developed these analogies as well as many examples of selective anion binding ligands. This short slide decks gives background to her work as well as some relevant introductory material.
This LO is part of a special VIPEr collection honoring the 2021 ACS National Award recipients in the field of inorganic chemistry. Kristin Bowman-James was the recipient of the ACS Award in Inorganic Chemistry for her fundamental contributions to inorganic chemistry by providing insight to anion coordination from a transition metal coordination perspective.

- Review concepts and terms from transition metal coordination chemistry
- Understand how those same concepts can be used in anion coordination chemistry
- Learn some applications of anion binding ligands
If an instructor would like to bring in a timely introduction to important work that is being honored, this could be brought in after introducing coordination chemistry in a lower level course or in an upper level course featuring supramolecular interactions (part of the ACS polymer requirement!)
