A Viewpoint article highlighting IONiC and VIPEr has just appeared in Articles ASAP in the journal Inorganic Chemistry (DOI: 10.1021/ic2006919)!  The goal of the article is to strengthen the connections between cutting-edge research and the undergraduate classroom.  We think that IONiC and VIPEr are excellent resources to build these connections and bring the excitement of research into our undergraduate courses.

Here are links to the three learning objects on VIPEr that are featured in the Viewpoint article and that connect students to research reported in the journal Inorganic Chemistry:  Please note that in order to view a "Problem Set" learning object, you must be logged in as a registered VIPEr user with verified faculty privileges.

Introducing Inorganic Chemistry - First Day Activities: In-Class Activity

Tetrahedral Tellurate: Literature Discussion

The Unusual[F3S≡NXeF]+ Cation with a Xe-N Bond: Problem Set

These are numerous other learning objects posted on VIPEr that have been inspired by recent research published in Inorganic Chemistry. Browse through the following list to see the titles of the learning object and their type.  Each page on VIPEr will also provide a link to the original article in Inorganic Chemistry.

Coordination Chemistry via Inorganic Chemistry ASAP: In-Class activity

The [XeF]+ Cation and Ion-Pairing in [MF6]- and [M2F11]- Salts (M = As, Sb, Bi): In-Class Activity

The Extremely Explosive Carbonyl Diazide Molecule: In-Class Activity

Clicker Quiz 2: Defects, Silicates, and BeF2: Problem Set

If we do not limit the journal to Inorganic Chemistry, there are numerous other learning objects on VIPEr inspired by cutting-edge research published in Science, JACS, and other journals.  In particular, try browsing the "Literature Discussion" and the "Problem Set" type learning objects to find more examples.

We hope you will try some of these out in your classroom!  Post a comment and let us know how they worked or contribute your own learning object bringing cutting-edge research into the classroom to VIPEr!

VIPEr saw a positive "bump" in its stats when the article came out on ASAP. Wonder if the same thing will happen when it comes out in print.

I haven't seen a newly printed journal since we stopped circulating new issues of JACS and OM in 1997. Do they still actually run off paper copies? I guess I've assumed that they stopped doing so around a decade ago, but I might be wrong. I don't think I've ever seen a printed version of an article in which the year began with a "2".

So how do you say "when it moves out of ASAP and gets a real publication date"?

"... when it gets assigned a page number."  Whatever that is...

The Viewpoint article about IONiC/VIPEr in Inorganic Chemistry is now number one under "Most Read Articles" for the month!! Way to go everyone (especially Betsy).
