Description

This literature discussion LO was created for the ACS National Award Winners 2024 collection. Dr. Charles Campbell was the recipient of the 2024 Gabor A. Somorjai Award for Creative Research in Catalysis. This LO is based on the article "Energetics of Adsorbed Formate and Formic Acid on Cu(111) by Calorimetry,” (ACS Catal. 2022, 12, 10950-10960; https://doi.org/10.1021/acscatal.2c02608) which investigated the adsorption of formate and formic acid onto copper surfaces to elucidate the heats of formation of the adsorbate-Cu bonds and the bond enthalpies of these species.

Learning Goals

After reading the article and answering the discussion questions, students will be able to:

  • understand the significance of the presented research
  • apply general chemistry concepts (Hess's Law) to current research problems
Implementation Notes

This LO has not been used yet, but it is recommended to assign these questions for the students before class, so that they come prepared to discuss them in class.

The last question could be used in a general chemistry I class after discussion of thermochemistry and Hess's Law to offer a real-life application of this concept.

Evaluation Methods

One possible method of evaluation is to collect student answers to the guiding questions before the discussion takes place in class and/or collect student answers after the class discussion and/or collect answers written by small groups during the discussion.
