Description

This learning object focuses on a recent publication (Acta Crystallographia 2014, C70, 260 -266) by the Collins research group in the Department of Chemistry at The College of Wooster.  Specifically, the paper evaluates the coordination diversity of a N-donor ligand, 2-phenyl-1,10-phenanthroline(pnp) with three new pnp-metal complexes containing Au(III), Cu(II), and Pd(II) metal centers.

Learning Goals

There are various goals for this activity, which reinforces fundamental and organic and inorganic chemistry concepts learned in early courses.

  1. The student will apply concepts focused on structural analysis using 1H NMR spectroscopy.
  2. The student will read and critically evaluate the chemical literature.
  3. The student will generate ligand group orbitals (LGOs) for a pnp-metal complex using the approach developed by Professor Adam Johnson (Harvey  Mudd).
  4. The student will learn about the peer-review process for publishing results in the chemical literature.
Equipment needs

Laptop and LCD Projector for Powerpoint Presentation.

Implementation Notes

The article will be used to begin a discussion on coordination chemistry. The students will be required to read the journal article before class and answer a series of questions. The students are required to bring their typed responses to the class for a discussion. After the discussion, the instructor will give a powerpoint presentation on results not published in the article. Furthermore, the instructor will also discuss actual reviewer comments on the manuscript prior to publication (see powerpoint in faculty only files).

Time Required
50 min class period

Evaluation

Evaluation Methods

Each student will turn in a hard copy of his or her responses to the discussion questions. The grade for the assignment will be based on their attention to details and format. Specifically, evaluating on the quality of their ideas.
