Description

A detailed in-class analysis of the paper Mechanism for the Activation of Carbon Monoxide via Oxorhenium Complexes” by Smeltz, Boyle, and Ison; J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2011, 133, 13288-13291.  Students will apply their knowledge of organometallic chemistry concepts to the mechanistic scheme in the paper.

Learning Goals

• Students will be able to determine dn electron counts, oxidation states, and overall electron count for a series of oxo rhenium complexes.

• Students will be able to identify plausible reaction pathways for an organometallic reaction.

• Students apply their knowledge of reaction mechanisms to propose a likely mechanism for the activation of carbon monoxide.

Equipment needs

none

Implementation Notes

Students will not be supplied with the full paper before class.  Students will be given Scheme 2 of the JACS paper at the beginning of the class period. We intend for students to work in groups of 3 to 4.  Ideally, this exercise will a capstone exercise following discussion of organometallic chemistry in class. The related literature discussion on this paper could be a follow-up to this in-class activity.

Time Required
1 class period

This looks good and I plan to use this in my inorganic course in the Spring.
