Description

Various topics ranging from coordination chemistry, electrochemistry, solid state chemistry and point group and symmetry are discussed from the JACS article published by Smaranda C. Marinescu and her co-workers.  The article describes the conversion of CO2 to CO by using cobalt aminopyridine macrocycle catalysts.

This LO is part of a special VIPEr collection honoring the 2021 ACS National Award recipients in the field of inorganic chemistry. Smaranda C. Marinescu was the recipient of the Harry Gray Award for Creative Work in Inorganic Chemistry by a Young Investigator for her outstanding accomplishments in developing efficient catalytic systems for the conversion of solar energy into chemical bonds.

Learning Goals

Students should be able to:

a) Determine the oxidation number of metal centers and count total valence electrons in metal complexes

b) Deduce a likely mechanism for a ligand substitution reaction

c) Justify the observed colors of metal complexes containing different ligands

d) Perform a density calculation of a unit cell

e) Locate symmetry operations of a macrocycle
