This literature discussion involves various aspect of organometallic chemistry ranging from synthesis, reactions, symmetry, NMR and IR spectroscopy of organometallic compounds as well as catalysis.
Students are asked to read the article published in Angewandte Chime, and answer the questions from the worksheet. Students later discuss their answers with the entire class.

Students will be able to:
- determine organometallic reactions involved in the synthesis of organometallic compounds as well as in the catalytic cycle.
- apply the concept of pi-backbonding to explain the difference in wavenumbers of the observed IR absorption peaks
- determine the key features of the organometallic compounds from the reported NMR spectroscopy information
- Identify the effectiveness of catalytic reactions by means of turnover numbers and turnover frequencies
This LO was employed in my Inorganic Chemistry II thai is taken by junior and senior chemistry majors. I was this LO after we have completed the organometallic chemistry chapters. Students have learned about point groups, NMR spectroscopy of heteronuclear atoms (including unusual NMR spectra such as virtual couplings), effect of pi-backbonding on IR spectroscopy, organometallic reactions and catalysis.
Evaluation
No formal evaluation was implemented. I guided the students with questions, and I allowed the students to work on the questions on their own and then we discussed their answers as a class.
Students got mots of the answers correct (assigning point group, calculations on TON and TOF, effect of ligand on CO wavenumbers, assigning oxidation states and counting valence electrons of Fe centers, and most of the mechanism of reaction).
Students, however, missed on the identifying the organometallic reactions that involves sub-steps like the formation of D from C, and A from B.
