The joys of technology and teaching - additional contributions encouraged

Submitted by Joanne Stewart / Hope College on Tue, 11/08/2011 - 18:45

Dear IONiC friends,

I decided to put this in the "Faculty Only" section because it's a bit of a rant.

I hope that it inspires similar contributions about the joys of technology and teaching. I could imagine similar rants about lecture and laboratory preparation. And just so you know, the following list is exactly what I had to do today to prepare a general chemistry exam.

WRITING A TEST

The old days, before technology:

1.     Hand out blue books.

2.     Write test questions on board.

Dear Colleagues,

I am thinking about teaching concepts of nuclear chemistry for the first time. Any suggestions or ideas?

template for manuscript preparation - Inorganic Chemistry

Submitted by Chris Goh / Williams College on Tue, 10/18/2011 - 12:29

Hi there,

I am trying to work with the article template for the journal Inorganic Chemistry (http://pubs.acs.org/page/inocaj/submission/templates.html). The website only provides templates for  Microsoft Word 2003 for Windows. I suppose I should confess to being a PC user.

GChem is not inorganic?

Submitted by Sibrina Collins / College of Arts and Sciences at Lawrence Technological University on Fri, 09/02/2011 - 15:06

Dear VIPEr Colleagues,

I hope all is well. I was recently informed by a friend that GChem is not inorganic chemistry, but it is actually P-Chem with a little bit of analytical chemistry. I am curious to know your view.

Tenure Reviews

Submitted by Sibrina Collins / College of Arts and Sciences at Lawrence Technological University on Mon, 08/08/2011 - 13:32

Dear VIPEr Colleagues,

I wanted to know if their would be an interest in senior VIPEr faculty willing to share their tenure review packages with junior VIPEr faculty? I understand that tenure review/policies vary from institution to institution, but this could be a good mentoring opportunity to help junior faculty. I am not up for tenure this fall. Just a thought.

Lilly Conference on Teaching

Submitted by Nick K / University of Michigan-Flint on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 08:44

One of the offices here on campus is offering to pay for faculty to attend the Lilly Conference for teaching either this fall or spring.  I am asking faculty member here on the forum if they have ever been to one and if they could give some insight as to what they got out of it.  The conference this fall has some sessions that I think will be very beneficial to some of the things that I want to try.  I am just not familiar with it at this poiint.

Thanks,

Nick

A-level credit policy for international students

Submitted by Catherine Oertel / Oberlin College on Fri, 07/29/2011 - 16:24
Our international student enrollment is growing, and in the past few years we've had inquiries from students about whether we accept A- level coursework for placement or credit.  We do have a (rather generous, I think) policy of giving introductory chemistry credit and placement for certain AP scores and higher-level IB scores.  I'm wondering if anyone's department has a policy in place for handling A-level work. How do you view it in comparison with AP or IB?  In looking at a few sample syllabi, our sense is that the level can be quite high.
