I have a question that perhaps someone will have an answer to-- in the lab last week I had students adding TiCl4 to water to show that it creates a very acidic solution and generates HCl gas. One thing that has always bothered me when I've done that reaction is that in addition to the expected white TiO2 precipitate, a bright yellow compound is also generated in many cases. Anyone have any idea what that could be? It has always stumped me...

The thf adduct of TiCl4, TiCl4(thf)2 is a yellow solid. While it may seem unlikely, perhaps your yellow compound is something like TiCl4(H2O)2.
