This Challenge trains student to find inconsistencies in a molecular-orbital diagram. Inorganic Challenges are exercises designed to be solved by a small group of students. I also use questions like this on exams, to avoid the difficulty of students creating MO diagrams in which they can get off on the wrong track.
Evaluation
They do well - it naturally leads to discussions.
I have used this question and others like it on exams, and have been happy. It feels like it gives some credit to students who can't quite seem to be able to accurately generate MO diagrams on their own (and really, that is not the most important skill I hope they gain from this unit), but understand the key concepts.
