Description

In this paper by Andersen and Berg (J. Am. Chem. Soc.1988110 (14), pp 4849–4850) the authors present magnetic measurements that refute the calculated ground state of an organometallic cobalt nitrosyl dimer. Students will learn about two physical techniques for measuring magnetism and will learn how magnetic measurements can be used to indicate paramagnetism versus diamagnetism.

Learning Goals
  • Students will be able to count electrons in an organometallic dimer and predict metal-metal bond order.
  • Students will be able to describe at least one method for measuring magnetic susceptibility.
  • Students will be able to explain how magnetic susceptibility results are used to determine if a compound is paramagnetic or diamagnetic.
Implementation Notes

Students will be given the link to the paper and the reading questions one week before the in-class discussion. During the day of the discussion, they will work in groups of 6 and discuss their answers to the questions. Students will be allowed to add to their answers during the discussion.
