My Notes
Description
This text is one of the most approachable group theory texts for the advanced undergraduate audience.  Chapter headings include Fundamental Concepts, Representations of Groups, Techniques and Relationships for Chemical Applications, Symmetry and Chemical Bonding, Equations for Wave Functions, Vibrational Spectroscopy, and Transition Metal Complexes.  The emphasis is on getting the reader up to speed quickly, applying the mathematical tools to chemical systems rather than proving everything rigorously.  Each chapter concludes with a nice collection of end-of-chapter problems, some of which are drawn from the chemical literature complete with references.  There is a solutions manual available on request from Wiley.  I have used this as a text for the first half of my Advanced Inorganic Chemistry course for more than 5 years.  My students who go off to graduate school and take Group Theory vastly prefer Carter to the other texts in use!  $71.95 for paperback version from Wiley, 299 pages.
