Does anyone have any experience generating small quantitites of anhydrous HBr? NaBr and ortho-phosphoric acid did not seem to work overly well. At least I don't seem to be generating much of the gas. I have used NaCl and H2SO4 to generate HCl in the past and that is a very rapid and vigorous reaction.

Good Day Chip,
Reacting sulfuric acid with NaBr typically yields a combination of HBr and Br2. In order to generate gaseous HBr, either a strong non-oxidizing acid must be used or a different set of reaction conditions. One possibility to to react PBr3 with water to form HBr.
PBr3 + 3 H2O -> H3PO3 + 3HBr.
Good Luck.
Sincerely,
Cliff
Hi Chip,
This post from "In the pipeline" has info on a Br2/tetralin method in the comments.

You might check into that ref and see if it will work for your purpose.
