A collection of all of the IONiC VIPEr SLiThErs (Supporting Learning with Interactive Teaching: a Hosted, Engaging Roundtable). These events are short presentations on a topic followed by a period of discussion between the presenter and live participants. Each of these events is recorded and posted to the IONiC VIPEr YouTube Channel.
Marilyn Mackiewicz (Oregon State University) is the 2020 awardee of the Stanley C. Israel Regional Award for Advancing Diversity in the Chemical Sciences from the ACS. Her unique story and experiences are presented, along with how faculty can make their spaces and themselves more welcoming.
BoB LeSuer (Associate Professor at SUNY - Brockport and President of IBiB) discusses using a maker space for teaching chemistry. Topics include: digital fabrication of pedagogical materials (models and periodic tables); instrumentation (potentiostat and liquid dispenser); and upcycling plastics into functional materials. Of special interest to this group will be work BoB has done on making the ICE solid state model kits available to anyone!
In this SLiThEr, we discuss the construction, implementation and results of a departmental climate survey. Included with the LO are the questions that were administered to students as part of the climate survey.
Have you heard about alternate grading systems such as specifications (specs) grading, but don't think you have the time or energy to remake a whole curriculum? Come hear about a hybrid-points-specs grading system! The hybrid system does not require a complete course redesign, but still integrates standards-based grading practices that promote mastery of material and make grading easier. Implementation and outcomes in general chemistry and inorganic chemistry classes is discussed.

This SLiThEr was presented by Nancy Williams (Keck Science) and Benny Chan (The College of New Jersey) on Inclusivity (particularly from the LGBTQ+ perspective, but in a broader sense as well) in Inorganic Chemistry, with a focus on the inorganic chemistry classroom.
