Electronic Lab Notebooks

Submitted by Barbara Reisner / James Madison University on Thu, 07/11/2013 - 13:52

Research this summer has pushed me over the edge into thinking that it really would make more sense to record data into an enotebook rather than the standard lab notebook - particularly for data analysis.

Does anyone have experience with electronic notebooks?
Last year, Kurt asked about electronic notebooks , but I didn't see any responses. He had some great questions. Here are a few questions that I'd love to know your thoughts on.

Copper Perchlorate

Submitted by Sibrina Collins / College of Arts and Sciences at Lawrence Technological University on Thu, 07/11/2013 - 10:44

Dear VIPEr Colleagues,

I hope all is well. One of my colleagues is doing some kinetic experiments using solutions of copper perchlorate. However, they have two bottles of copper perchlorate, an old one (2 years old) and a new one purchased last month. But the results are inconsistent. Is there a simple measurement/experiment that they could do to determine if the two bottles actually have the same material? Anyone have experience with copper perchlorate?

Thanks,

Sibrina

Isothermal Titration Calorimeter that I could use?

Submitted by Shirley Lin / United States Naval Academy on Thu, 06/06/2013 - 09:36

Dear VIPEr community,

Does anyone have an isothermal titration calorimeter (ITC) that they would be willing to let me use? It is preferable if the instrument is MicroCal brand. The company charges $866/sample if you ask them to run on a fee per sample basis...a bit out of my price range.

Thanks!

Does anyone have experience working with this salt. In particular, I am looking for suggestions of how to store it properly. I have a 25.0 g bag of it and have to believe there is a better way to store it.

base bath recipes

Submitted by Adam Johnson / Harvey Mudd College on Thu, 04/18/2013 - 17:00

I need to remake my base bath and I don't remember how I made it.  It has been a LONG time.  I mean, I could throw KOH and iPrOH together, but does anyone have a recipe?

Modeling IR of adsorbed molecules

Submitted by Joanne Stewart / Hope College on Mon, 02/25/2013 - 12:23

Dear VIPEr folks,

A student asked me about IR spectroscopy of adsorbed molecules and I don't have any experience with this. In particular, he's in my computational chemistry class right now and wondered if he could predict the IR behavior of adsorbed species. This is NOT my area of expertise and I'm wondering if someone could point us in a direction to start learning about this.

Thanks, Joanne

HBr (g)

Submitted by Chip Nataro / Lafayette College on Tue, 01/22/2013 - 13:19

Does anyone have any experience generating small quantitites of anhydrous HBr? NaBr and ortho-phosphoric acid did not seem to work overly well. At least I don't seem to be generating much of the gas. I have used NaCl and H2SO4 to generate HCl in the past and that is a very rapid and vigorous reaction.

XPS Analysis?

Submitted by Nicole Crowder / University of Mary Washington on Tue, 01/22/2013 - 10:50

I am looking for a collaborator to analyze a series of modified copper surfaces using XPS. Surface modifications have been confirmed by reflectance IR, but I am looking for a secondary characterization (and don't have the funding to go to a commercial analysis company).

Please let me know if you are interested in working with me on this project, or if you know of someone who might be willing. Thanks!

Nobel Prize?

Submitted by Kyle Grice / DePaul University on Wed, 10/10/2012 - 00:30

Hello Ionic,

This is a little off topic, but I thought I would put it in this forum.

I was wondering if anyone had any predictions for who will win the Nobel prize tomorrow morning (I'm thinking not a solid-state or bio person/people this year because of several in the last 10 years... crossing my fingers for something inorganic-related)?

Also, what living inorganic chemists do you think deserve the nobel prize (and for what research accomplishments)?
