This LO consists of some web resources for discussing chemophilately, the study of chemistry through postage stamps.

This LO is part of a special VIPEr collection honoring the 2021 ACS National Award recipients in the field of inorganic chemistry. Daniel Rabinovich was the recipient of the ACS Award for Research at an Undergraduate Institution for a career involving outstanding supervision and mentorship of undergraduate chemical professionals in synthetic inorganic chemistry

 

Proton-Assisted Reduction of CO2 by Cobalt Aminopyridine Macrocycles (Marinescu)

Description

Various topics ranging from coordination chemistry, electrochemistry, solid state chemistry and point group and symmetry are discussed from the JACS article published by Smaranda C. Marinescu and her co-workers.  The article describes the conversion of CO2 to CO by using cobalt aminopyridine macrocycle catalysts.

Buffer solutions Virtual Lab

This is a virtual adaptation of a buffer capacity lab experiment using the chemcollective digital workspace.  Students learn to make buffers in different ways and then test the capacity of their buffers to understand what makes an optimal buffer.

This particular roundtable was presented by two senior undergraduate on their experiences during the pandemic. In addition to talking about the challenges or remote learning and research, they also discuss applying to graduate school and the apprehension they face making a decision without visiting the schools.

The activity allows students to present the results and analysis of a lab experiment in the form a research brief.  Students have the option to create a written brief or record themselves giving the brief as a PowerPoint presentation.

This is the 6th SLiThEr (SLiThErs - Supporting Learning with Interactive Teaching: a Hosted, Engaging Roundtable). It was hosted by Dr. Joanne Stewart from Hope College. She discussed how to do effective group work in an online environment. This information is very useful for any class at any level and we highly recommend checking it out. Dr. Stewart also has an LO on effective group work that has been updated for online group work.
