Learning Object

A learning object is a small instructional module that is focused on a specific topic. This module should have clearly articulated learning outcomes and be easily adoptable and adaptable by other faculty members.

Collections

A Collection is a set of learning objects that are related by topical coverage (such as symmetry or nanomaterials), thematic (ACS Award Winner LOs or IONiC video  content), and instructional resources (Inorganic Chemistry for New Faculty or Things to do on the first day of class). Template

Five Slides About

A Five Slides About LO is a slide deck (of variable, but brief, length) that is focused on a specific topic and could be used in the classroom. Authors are expected to provide a slide deck and instructor notes for how this LO could be used in class. Template

In-Class Activity

An In-Class Activity focuses on active learning in the classroom through guided inquiry, prompted group discussions, computational work, or hands on manipulation of model kits or other manipulatives. Authors are expected to provide a student handout, an answer key, implementation notes for instructors, and some evaluation of the activity, if any was done. Template

Lab Experiment

A Lab Experiment LO is a lab-based activity that focuses on inorganic topics and introduces laboratory or computational skills. Authors are expected to provide a laboratory procedure, equipment/instrumentation needs, and implementation notes for instructors. Template

Literature Discussion

A Literature Discussion is a guided exploration of an article from the primary chemical literature. The focus of this type of LO can range from interpreting a specific figure in an article to a comprehensive examination of the entire article. Guiding questions are often used to help students read a complicated report and promote understanding of the topics discussed. These LOs can be used for in-class discussions. Authors are expected to provide a student handout, an answer key, a link to the article, implementation notes for instructors, and some evaluation of the LO, if any was done. Answers to the questions will only be available to approved faculty users. Template

Problem Set

A Problem Set LO is a set of questions or problems of varying complexity. Exam questions can also be included in this class of LO. Answers to the questions should be provided. Authors are expected to provide a student handout, an answer key, implementation notes for instructors, and some evaluation of the LO, if any was done. Exam questions and answer keys are available for approved faculty users only. Template

Syllabus

In a Syllabus LO, a user shares their syllabus for their lecture or laboratory course that focuses on an inorganic-related area. These LOs provide a reference for topic coverage and course scheduling. Template

Textbook

Users can suggest excellent texts or share the textbook they use in their course(s) in a Textbook LO. In the LO, users can provide a description of the book and why it is a good choice for their course(s) or similar courses.

Web Resources and Apps

Users can share useful web resources/websites, videos, or apps with the other members of the community in a Web Resources and Apps LO. These LOs contain a description of the website and implementation notes as to how it might be used. These resources can be linked to other learning objects that utilize them. Template

1FLO

This 1FLO label (1 Figure Learning Object) applies to learning objects that are focused on a single figure or table from the primary literature, with questions or activities based on the examination of that figure. 1FLOs are typically In-Class Activities, Literature Discussions, or Problem Sets.
