First off, don't worry, I won't spoil anything if you haven't seen it yet. And if you aren't sure what I mean by 'it', I am talking about Star Wars Episode VII. I am a little bit of a fan. It all goes back to 1977 when I saw it for the first time with my father in Texas. It's one of my only memories of him. But I remember that opening crawl. It was just Star Wars then. No episode IV A New Hope. Han shot first. It was amazing. I remember the chills in The Empire Strikes Back at the 'No, I am your father'. I had the toys. A Death Star play station. An AT-AT. I saved Kenner proofs of purchase to order Boba Fett through the mail. And then came the dark times. The waiting in line to get tickets to The Phantom Menace. The appearance of he who shall not be named. Lucas' lack of ability to write a love story and to stop playing with CGI and special editions. It was a dark period. Then the fear and trepidation when Disney bought the franchise and put JJ Abrams in charge of returning the franchise to glory. I was joined by fellow VIPEr Bob LeSuer as we went Thursday night at 7 pm. While waiting in line for more time than either of us would care to admit, we did talk about chemistry. And that's why this post belongs on VIPEr. We saw the movie. We saw it again the next morning. It's been a wonderful way to end a very hectic semester of teaching an overload. In addition to enjoying the movie, we had some time to play a few games and commiserate as the e-mails from my gen chem students trickled in wondering what they could do now to raise their grades. It seems that the flow of these e-mails has finally stopped. So, with that I wish you a happy end of the semester. Enjoy your break and have a happy holiday season! There will be a little break in BITeS until 2016. Expect our next post to come from our project meeting in California!
