A question from an anonymous post doc...

"When your department has a tenure track opening do you send a member of the search committee to the ACS AEI poster session? What about when you are looking for visiting or adjunct faculty?"

I am sure the community has lots of different perspectives on this one.

We generally do not either.

I tried going the ACS AEI poster session once with recruiting in mind.  I found that most if not all poster presenters were not the least bit interested in Primarily undergraduate institutions.

Probably will not try again.

We have not sent anyone specifically to the AEI poster session, but if someone was already planning to be at the ACS meeting, we would probably send someone.  Also, I believe we used the AEI list of abstracts as a recruiting tool in our last search.

I participated in the AEI poster session twice myself and both times found it to be useful.  (Again, I was already going to be at the meeting, so I didn't make a special trip.)  In both years I found out about positions that I had not yet seen advertised or positions that I had not considered at first glance.

Good luck with the job search, Flo.  I really recommend buying (for ~$10, so not expensive) the Council on Undergraduate Research's booklet titled, "How to Get a Job at a Primarily Undergraduate Insitution" - or something like that.  I found it extremely helpful when I was job hunting.

I attended the year I was going on the job market, but it helped that the meeting was being held in the city I was living in, so there was no real cost to doing so.  That said, I spoke with quite a few people and found it very useful.  Perhaps it was because I was one of the candidates who was specifically interested in working at a PUI?  In fact, I did speak with faculty from the institution I now work at.  That said, they were also likely there because the meeting was local.   I doubt that anyone in my dept would make a special trip just to attend that session.  And certainly not for a visiting or adjunct position.
